Potato production in Duhok Province has reached a record level this year. Farmers harvested 600,000 tons of potatoes, an increase from last year’s output. This achievement confirms the importance of potato production in Duhok Province for Kurdistan and Iraq.
Farmers cultivated more than 48,000 dunams of land this season. The rich soil in Duhok provides excellent conditions for potato farming. Several new potato varieties have been planted, expanding both quality and quantity in the markets.
Storage facilities also improved this year. In one cold store, 370 tons of potatoes are preserved with advanced systems. Duhok currently has 15 warehouses. Each one can hold between 350 and 400 tons, ensuring steady supply throughout the year.
Hazhar Mohammed, a warehouse owner, explained the importance of these facilities. He said modern refrigeration helps extend the freshness of potatoes. This allows farmers to bring their products to the market at the right time.
Officials also highlighted this success. Mosleh Hassan, Deputy Director General of Agriculture in Duhok, confirmed that production not only meets local needs but also supplies central and southern Iraq. He added that exports are now reaching foreign markets.
The increase is clear when compared with last year. In 2024, potato farmers planted 44,000 dunams and produced 500,000 tons. This year, both farmland and yields grew, adding 100,000 tons to the harvest.
The rapid development of agriculture demonstrates the province’s potential. Farmers continue to benefit from fertile land, modern storage, and supportive infrastructure. The climate allows consistent farming, while technology raises production levels.
Potato production in Duhok Province is now one of Iraq’s strongest agricultural achievements. It strengthens food security for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. At the same time, it creates valuable export opportunities and supports economic growth across the country.
