A new initiative designed to strengthen economic opportunities for young people and women has officially launched in the Kurdistan Region. The program, called Bidaya (Beginning), aims to improve skills, entrepreneurship, and employment opportunities across the region.
The launch event took place in Erbil under the slogan “Skills, Entrepreneurship, and Employment in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.” The ceremony brought together senior government officials, business leaders, representatives of local and international organizations, and members of the media.
Among the attendees were Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw, Director of the NGO Directorate Falah Hassan, and Federation of Chambers of Commerce President Shvan Abdulrahman.
The Bidaya initiative receives funding from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. Meanwhile, the international organization Oxfam is implementing the project in partnership with the Kurdistan Human Rights Organization.
Project organizers said the initiative focuses on creating economic opportunities through vocational and technical training programs. In addition, it offers financial support and assistance for small and emerging businesses. As a result, participants can gain practical skills and improve their chances of finding sustainable employment.
Furthermore, the project encourages entrepreneurship by helping individuals start and grow their own businesses. Officials believe this approach can strengthen the private sector and create long-term economic benefits.
According to organizers, the initiative has already reached 2,059 beneficiaries in Erbil, Duhok, and Sulaymaniyah. The program serves a wide range of groups, including young people, women, refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and members of host communities.
Moreover, the project seeks to improve economic integration and expand access to sustainable livelihoods. At the same time, it aims to strengthen social cohesion and community resilience.
Through training, financial assistance, and business support, the Bidaya initiative hopes to promote inclusive economic growth. Ultimately, officials say empowering people with skills and job opportunities will help build stronger and more resilient communities throughout the Kurdistan Region.
