The figs harvest season has started across the Kurdistan Region. Local markets now offer fresh figs from farms across the region. Kurdistan fig production continues to expand each year. It supports thousands of farmers and reduces the need for imported fruit.

The Kurdistan Region produces nearly 20,000 tons of local figs every year. Local farmers supply more than 91% of domestic demand. Therefore, the Kurdistan Regional Government also places tariffs on imported figs during the harvest season. This policy protects local growers and encourages local production.

All four parts of Kurdistan produce more than 100,000 tons of figs each year. Eastern Kurdistan contributes about 52,000 tons. Southern Kurdistan produces around 20,000 tons. Northern Kurdistan adds nearly 20,000 tons. Moreover, Western Kurdistan contributes about 4,750 tons. If Kurdistan were one country, it would rank third or fourth among the world’s largest fig producers.

Turkey leads global fig production with 375,000 tons. Egypt follows with 187,900 tons. Algeria produces 112,300 tons. Morocco grows 109,600 tons. Iran harvests 67,800 tons each year. Spain produces 43,500 tons, while Syria grows 39,600 tons. Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia also rank among the world’s top producers.

Akre is the leading fig-producing district in Southern Kurdistan. Taq Taq ranks second. The town held its first Fig Festival in 2022. Akre also exports its figs to the United States and several European countries. These exports show the rising demand for Kurdistan fig production.

Figs hold cultural and religious importance across the region. The Quran mentions figs alongside olives. Southern Kurdistan grows many famous fig varieties. These include Zarda, Akrey, Azmiri, Mirani, Reyhani, Shoshi, Taq Taq, Benati, Bijil, Halsho, and Marga.

People enjoy figs fresh during summer. They also dry them for winter use. Many families prepare traditional fig jam. Furthermore, others serve dried figs with nuts. Every part of the fig tree has practical value. People use the leaves in traditional medicine. They also use the white sap to treat some skin conditions. Fig seed oil contains vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids. Many skincare products include this oil.

Fresh figs provide fiber and natural energy. Therefore, they support digestion and help regulate blood pressure. They strengthen the immune system and may help control blood sugar levels. Farmers usually grow new fig trees from cuttings. The harvest season begins in early July and continues until early September.

Growing production and stronger exports continue to strengthen Kurdistan fig production. The industry has become one of the region’s most valuable agricultural sectors. It also offers strong opportunities for future export growth.
