Kurdistan Region sumac production is expanding strongly in 2025. Farmers in Duhok have increased the cultivated area to 12,550 dunams. This growth highlights the importance of the crop for the local economy and international trade.

In addition to sumac, turmeric cultivation is also on the rise. Officials from the Agriculture Directorate in Duhok reported that turmeric output will reach 7,480 tons this year. This marks a 20 percent increase compared to last year. Farmers are focusing more on turmeric because of strong demand and profitable prices in regional markets.

The Kurdistan Region grows three main types of turmeric. These are white, red, and yellow turmeric. Each type provides diversity and value for both farmers and consumers. Stable pricing ensures that farmers continue to invest in the crop.

Sumac, known as “smaq” in Kurdish, remains one of the most profitable local products. Farmers sell white sumac at around 7,000 dinars per kilogram. Red varieties are available for 5,000 dinars, while green types range between 5,500 and 6,000 dinars. These price levels encourage producers to expand their fields and maintain higher quality standards.

Exports play a key role in this success. So far, the region has exported 665 tons of sumac to Turkey. This achievement demonstrates the strong reputation of Kurdish products in international markets. It also provides farmers with new income sources beyond local sales.

A factory in Akre further supports this growth. The facility processes and prepares sumac for export abroad. It helps farmers connect with buyers, creates jobs, and strengthens the agricultural economy of the area.

Sumac also carries cultural significance. Families across Kurdistan use it in daily meals, especially with grilled meats, salads, and breads. Its sour flavor makes it one of the most recognized spices in the region. By combining cultural value with export potential, Kurdistan Region sumac production shows strong promise for future growth.
