Prime Minister Masrour Barzani inaugurated the Megal Project in Erbil, a $100 million private-sector investment that strengthens Kurdistan food production. The project, built on 366 acres, includes a slaughterhouse, shopping centre, animal control and wastewater treatment facility, waste incineration unit, and landscaped areas.
Officials say the plant will modernize local production, improve food security, and create jobs across multiple sectors. Prime Minister Barzani described the investment as “a major step toward agricultural self-sufficiency and food security in Kurdistan.” He added that the project unites livestock production, fodder supply, and animal trading under one system.
“This project integrates multiple sectors, promotes recycling, and will create more than 1,000 jobs,” Barzani said.
Therefore, Megal Project aims to boost Kurdistan food production by connecting farming and processing in a single location. This approach will increase efficiency, reduce costs, and support local farmers. Officials highlight that the initiative also strengthens private sector confidence in the region.
Furthermore, the KRG Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources recently announced policies to improve irrigation, reduce post-harvest losses, and provide access to modern farming tools. These measures complement the Megal Project’s goal of expanding Kurdistan food production.
Therefore, local residents welcomed the plant. A livestock trader in Erbil said, “We have waited years for projects like this. It allows small farmers to sell directly and earn fair income.”
Moreover, the project is part of a wider effort to develop Iraq’s agricultural and food industries. In recent months, processing facilities have opened in Duhok and Sulaymaniyah, adding value to local produce. Economists predict that such projects will stabilize rural incomes and increase exports.
Additionally, a senior advisor at the Ministry of Planning explained, “Processing agricultural goods locally keeps profits in the country and strengthens our economy.” The Megal Project demonstrates how public and private collaboration can drive real progress in food security and employment.
By combining livestock, fodder, trading, and processing, the project marks a milestone in Kurdistan food production. Analysts say this model could inspire similar investments in other sectors.
As the agriculture sector grows, the Megal Project sets a benchmark for modern food processing in Kurdistan. It strengthens the region’s economy, supports farmers, and ensures more stable food supply for residents.
