The Kurdistan Region has launched Iraq’s fifth snow festival atop Korek Mountain, northeast of Erbil. Organizers aim to attract more winter tourists from across Iraq and neighboring countries. The event has already drawn thousands of visitors eager to enjoy the snowy slopes and festive atmosphere.

A total of 58 professional skiers, both local and international, are competing in this year’s festival. They are taking part in several winter sports competitions and recreational activities. Festival organizer Hussein Ali said the team wanted to make better use of the snow by expanding sports activities. He explained that the goal is to create opportunities for both international and local skiers to enjoy the mountain.

Visitors traveled from across the Kurdistan Region, as well as Iraq’s central and southern provinces. Some tourists even arrived from parts of Europe. Local officials say the growing turnout shows the rising popularity of winter tourism in the Region.

Halgur Sheikh Najeeb, head of the Soran Independent Administration, said the festival reflects a long tradition of winter sports in the area. He noted that adventurous winter activities in the region date back nearly 50 years. According to him, interest in these sports continues to grow each year.

The festival also gives young people the chance to learn modern skiing techniques. At the same time, participants enjoy traditional sledding, which remains popular among families. This blend of modern sport and long-standing customs adds to the festival’s appeal.

The first snow festival took place in 1951 in Haji Omeran, near Korek Mountain. Although organizers did not hold the event every year, they now hope to make it a regular winter tradition.

Rozh Kamaran from the Choman ski team praised the competition level. She said the team has strong athletes who can compete internationally, even though foreign teams often have better facilities.

Tourists say they enjoy the unique atmosphere. One visitor from Baghdad said he came to relax with friends from Lebanon and Basra. He praised the weather and the festival’s lively spirit.

The two-day festival highlights the Kurdistan Region’s efforts to expand winter tourism investment in its mountainous areas, known for their spectacular snowy landscapes.
