The Iraqi Ministry of Trade has taken new steps to secure food supplies. As a result, flour distribution for January may begin soon in the Kurdistan Region. Authorities expect the process to start this week. However, they still await a final order from Baghdad.

First, the ministry sent the first batch of wheat for 2026 to mills across Iraq. This move supports continuous flour production. It also aims to prevent any disruption in food supplies. Officials say the decision reflects growing attention to food security.

Meanwhile, local officials continue to monitor the situation closely. Dalir Abdulwahid, Director General of Food Distribution in Erbil, confirmed ongoing discussions. He explained that officials are talking about starting the January food ration distribution this week. However, no written instruction has arrived from the federal government yet. Therefore, authorities remain on standby.

At the same time, the General Company for Grain Trading has already begun action. The company started supplying locally produced wheat to public and private mills. This step ensures mills continue working without delays. It also helps stabilize flour availability for citizens across the region.

In addition, officials stress that coordination between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region remains essential. Any delay in official approval could slow the distribution process. Still, authorities express optimism due to the early wheat shipments.

Furthermore, discussions continue about expanding food ration items for the upcoming month of Ramadan. Officials consider adding more goods to support families during the holy month. Although no final decision exists yet, talks remain active.

Kurdistan Region authorities have also addressed public concerns. They confirmed that if the federal government approves the increase, the region will benefit equally. Officials said Baghdad would deliver the required quantities without discrimination. This assurance aims to reduce uncertainty among residents.

Moreover, food distribution officials highlight the importance of timely decisions. They argue that early planning helps prevent shortages. It also allows smoother logistics across governorates.

For now, residents await official confirmation. Until then, mills continue operating using the newly supplied wheat. Authorities promise immediate action once Baghdad issues the final order.

Overall, the government’s early wheat supply signals positive momentum. If approvals arrive soon, January flour distribution will begin without interruption. This outcome would support food stability and ease pressure on households across the Kurdistan Region.
