Ahmad Abadi, a senior official in the Iraqi energy sector, outlined the country’s electricity production strategy, noting that it is grounded in a structured framework in coordination with the Federal Ministry of Electricity. Recent agreements with General Electric are part of ongoing efforts to enhance national electricity infrastructure.

Iraq currently has the capacity to generate between 27,000 and 28,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity. However, consumption surges in the summer months, creating a significant gap between supply and demand. To address this, projects aimed at modernizing power networks and stations are underway.

In terms of cross-border energy cooperation, electricity imports from Turkey have been entirely halted. Four key transmission lines—Khor Zubair-Khorramshahr, Diyala-Mirsad, Amarah-Karkheh, and Khanaqin-Sarpol—are non-operational. Turkish authorities have indicated that repair work is ongoing, with plans to increase gas exports to Iraq to 45 million cubic meters by May under a bilateral agreement.

At peak, electricity imports from Turkey reached 1,200 MW, although this fluctuated depending on grid conditions. With the current shutdown of all four transmission lines, no electricity is being imported. Iraq’s gas import policy continues to align with national directives, and no actions will be taken outside the framework established by the federal government.
