Erbil water director says the Rapid Water Emergency Project marks a major breakthrough for the city. He confirmed that the project improves water quality, protects groundwater, and supports long-term stability. Hemn Group also said the project meets exceptional quality standards with strong backing from the Kurdistan Regional Government.
Additionally, Rabar Hussein, Director of Erbil Water, said the “Erbil Rapid Water Emergency Project” creates a major improvement in daily life. He said it strengthens the city’s water system and protects natural resources. The project currently supplies around 7,500 cubic meters of clean water each day. This volume already improves Erbil’s overall water situation.
Moreover, Hussein said one of the project’s biggest achievements is the protection of groundwater. He explained that many industrial facilities once relied on drilled wells. They extracted groundwater at high rates and increased the risk of depletion. Now every industrial facility connects to the rapid water system and receives treated water directly. He said this shift marks an important environmental milestone for Erbil.
He also said technical teams continue to expand coverage. Work moves at a fast pace to integrate internal networks across the capital. So far, teams installed nearly 330 kilometers of new water pipelines. This expansion strengthens the distribution system and improves service inside residential areas.
The Erbil Rapid Water project includes two major phases. The first phase is fully complete and already operational. The second phase is close to its final stage. Officials expect full completion very soon.
Hemn Group owner Khalid Khoshnaw spoke about the initiative. He said his company began the project after a direct request from Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. Barzani asked him to intervene to help Erbil resolve its growing water crisis. Khoshnaw said he immediately agreed because the city needed urgent support.
He highlighted the high standards used in construction. Khalid Khoshnaw said the project’s water turbidity level sits below 1 percent, compared to the global average of 5 percent. He added that no other regional project meets this level of quality. Moreover, he said Hemn Group dedicated all company resources to solving the water challenge.
The project is one of the major strategic initiatives announced by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s ninth cabinet. Both phases moved forward under direct instructions from Prime Minister Barzani. Officials say the project will remain a long-term pillar in Erbil’s water future.
