Erbil Kurdish Yogurt has become a beloved staple in many Kurdish-American homes and supermarkets across the United States. This creamy, tangy yogurt brings a taste of home to the diaspora. Social media posts show fans celebrating its authentic flavor and nostalgic appeal.
Halmat Nanakaliy, CEO and co-founder of Erbil Yogurt Inc., recalls the family’s journey from Erbil to the U.S. His father, Rasheed Nanakaliy, left Kurdistan in 1996 due to war and Saddam Hussein’s regime. After years of hardship, the family reunited in Chicago in 2001. Despite challenges, their Kurdish heritage inspired resilience, pride, and a deep respect for tradition.
Therefore, the family returned to their roots through yogurt making. Inspired by their mother’s recipes, they started producing yogurt at home. Demand grew quickly among friends and neighbors. In 2018, Erbil Yogurt Inc. officially opened in Illinois. Today, the company highlights Kurdish culture through its brand, packaging, and products.
“Erbil Kurdish Yogurt celebrates our heritage,” Halmat says. “Every product reflects our homeland and traditions.” The company produces traditional plain and smoked yogurts, flavored varieties, and a yogurt drink known as mastaw. Their yogurt is made with natural ingredients, including fresh milk and starter culture, ensuring authenticity and quality in every batch.
Halmat and his brother, Shalaw, manage the factory, employing several Kurdish workers. They emphasize hygiene, integrity, and traditional fermentation techniques. The company balances heritage with modern tastes to appeal to a wider audience while preserving authentic Kurdish flavors.
Customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many say the yogurt reminds them of home, while others discover Kurdish culture for the first time. Halmat notes, “Our yogurt is more than a product—it is a cultural ambassador.” Despite challenges, including regulatory hurdles and educating consumers, the company has grown steadily.
Looking forward, Erbil Yogurt plans to expand its product line with new flavors, lactose-free options, and probiotics. Halmat envisions broader distribution across the U.S. and globally. “Our goal is to share Kurdish culture through food while maintaining authenticity and pride,” he explains.
Erbil Kurdish Yogurt is not just yogurt. It is a taste of Kurdish heritage, a family legacy, and a symbol of resilience and cultural pride.
