The Erbil-Khabat road rehabilitation project is moving closer to completion as the second phase progresses quickly. Officials confirm that construction teams are advancing on schedule. Therefore, this project continues to stand as one of the most important infrastructure efforts in the Kurdistan Region.
The Kurdistan Regional Government places strong emphasis on modern road upgrades. In this context, the Erbil-Khabat road holds exceptional importance because it links Erbil, Khabat, and Mosul. Thousands of vehicles rely on this route every day. However, years of wear and congestion have created ongoing risks. As a result, accidents became more frequent, highlighting the urgent need for rehabilitation.
The project covers 5.5 kilometers on both sides of the highway. It extends from Seriani Gower in Erbil to the old checkpoint of Kani Qrjala. After a brief pause, construction restarted and gained momentum. Consequently, crews are now focused on finalizing the second phase without further delays.
Deputy Governor of Erbil, Massoud Karash, described the process in detail. He explained that one section, already open to drivers, will close again for a short period. This step is necessary in order to apply the second asphalt layer. Importantly, the polymer-based surface provides stronger durability. Moreover, it withstands rain, winter cold, and heavy trucks. In turn, the road will remain safer and last much longer.
The second phase carries a cost of more than five billion dinars. Authorities expect it to finish within 40 to 45 days. Afterward, both sides of the road will reopen to traffic. In addition, workers will begin constructing a sewer system between the two lanes. That project, valued at 350 million dinars, will further improve infrastructure in the area.
Overall, the Erbil-Khabat road rehabilitation project reflects the government’s commitment to long-term development. Stronger and safer roads ease congestion, support commerce, and improve daily mobility. Consequently, the completion of this project will mark a significant step in strengthening the region’s transport network.
By investing in durable infrastructure, the KRG ensures safer travel and better trade connections. Finally, the Erbil-Khabat road rehabilitation project is set to deliver lasting benefits for both citizens and businesses.
