The Erbil – Gomespan highway is nearing completion and will officially open to traffic by the end of January. The project has reached 98% completion and represents one of the Kurdistan Region’s most important infrastructure upgrades in recent years.
Additionally, construction work is now in its final phase. Teams are completing road markings, lane painting, and installing safety barriers. Project teams have already finalized all major works, including stormwater drainage systems, central medians, sidewalks, and other safety elements built to international standards.
Amir Ahmed, Director of Road Projects at the Hemn Group, said the project is progressing faster than planned. He confirmed that the project team will deliver the road ahead of schedule and that it meets high engineering and safety requirements. According to him, only final technical details remain before the official opening.
Therefore, the Erbil–Gomespan road extends for 38 kilometers and was completed in two phases. It begins at the Kasnazan Monument and connects to the Erbil–Koya road through a newly constructed overpass. One of the project’s main features is the Gomespan interchange. The circular junction includes three overpasses linking four key directions: Erbil, Koya, Gomespan, and Bastora. This design allows smooth traffic flow without traffic lights or stopping points.
For many years, residents called this route the “road of death” because of its narrow lanes and frequent fatal accidents. The new dual carriageway has changed that reputation. Wider roads, modern design, and improved safety measures have made travel much safer for drivers.
Moreover, local resident Safar Farhan said the project is a major improvement for the area. He noted that the old road took many lives and added that the new highway reduces travel time and distance.
Another resident, Ahmed Yassin, praised the Kurdistan Regional Government for completing the project. He said the road protects citizens and gives the area a modern and organized appearance.
Beyond improving safety, the Erbil–Gomespan highway supports tourism and trade. The area’s natural landscape attracts visitors, and the new road will improve access for businesses and transport services.
The foundation stone for the project was laid on October 10, 2024. The Hemn Group supervised its construction and accelerated the work to complete it in record time. Once opened, the Erbil–Gomespan highway will stand as a key route for safe travel and economic growth in the Kurdistan Region.
