The Erbil Emergency Water Project has now reached 90 percent completion. Officials confirm the final stage will finish within two months.

Ari Ahmad, Director General of Water and Sewerage, explained that three of the four lines are already active. The first line began delivering water in July. At that time, water reached several Erbil neighborhoods.

The project will cover around 40 neighborhoods. These include Shawes, Pirzin, Bahrka, Ankawa, Rashkin, Gazna, Pirmam, Koya Street, Sebiran, New Erbil, Pirrash, and Kesnazan. In addition, the network will extend to districts inside and outside the 120-meter and 150-meter roads. As a result, Erbil will no longer depend on water wells.

The system directs water from four large lines into storage basins. From these basins, the supply will move into the city. Moreover, Ahmad stressed that construction continues at a rapid pace. Therefore, residents can expect completion very soon.

Every summer, Erbil faces water shortages. However, this project aims to prevent the seasonal crisis. Families often struggle with limited supply, and population growth has made the problem worse. Consequently, the Kurdistan Regional Government launched the Erbil Emergency Water Project in September 2024.

The Erbil Emergency Water Project will provide 20,000 cubic meters of water per hour. This output equals 60 percent of Erbil’s total demand. Meanwhile, other existing projects will cover the remaining 40 percent.

The government invested about $480 million to secure the project. In addition, officials describe it as one of the largest infrastructure efforts in recent years. Once complete, it will provide stable and reliable water for all neighborhoods.

Finally, the project is expected to end decades of shortages in Erbil. As a result, the city will gain a sustainable solution for its growing water needs. The Erbil Emergency Water Project therefore represents a turning point in Erbil’s future development.
