The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has launched a major electricity project to provide 24-hour power across Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok. The initiative aims to ensure that all of Kurdistan enjoys continuous electricity before July 2026. This project marks a significant step toward solving long-standing electricity challenges in the region.
Currently, nearly five million residents, around 80% of Kurdistan’s population, have access to round-the-clock electricity. The coverage includes key districts such as Saidsadiq, Penjwen, Qaladze, Choman, Sidekan, Mergasor, Akrê, and Amêdî. The Runaki project aims to expand this service to all remaining areas over the next few months, ensuring that every household benefits from stable and reliable electricity.
Additionally, a source from the Ministry of Electricity confirmed, “This week, Runaki project teams have begun work along the borders of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok. Furthermore, operations are now underway in several districts, and we aim to provide 24-hour electricity across Kurdistan as quickly as possible.”
Moreover, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani emphasized the importance of the initiative on February 10 during the launch of the E-Pasula digital payment project. He said, “By the end of 2026, all of Kurdistan will have 24-hour electricity through the Runaki project. However, the work will be completed sooner, and by this summer, every area in Kurdistan will enjoy continuous electricity.”
Therefore, the Runaki project is one of the strategic initiatives of the ninth KRG cabinet. It addresses a 30-year electricity shortage and has successfully replaced and reconnected 4,000 transformers. These transformers work alongside roughly 700,000 connected vehicles, significantly improving electricity distribution and reducing pressure on the urban environment.
Overall, the Runaki project is transforming Kurdistan’s electricity sector. It provides reliable 24-hour electricity, strengthens infrastructure, and supports urban growth. The project demonstrates the KRG’s commitment to modernizing energy services and improving the daily lives of residents throughout Kurdistan.
