Bulgaria-Kurdistan Region economic relations gained new importance this week. On Thursday, August 28, 2025, Safin Dzeyi, Head of the Foreign Relations Office of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, welcomed Vasil Vasilev, the newly appointed Head of the Commerce and Economic Office of the Bulgarian Embassy in Erbil.

During their meeting, Vasilev confirmed Bulgaria’s intention to expand cooperation. He explained that Bulgaria sees the Kurdistan Region as a valuable partner for trade and investment. He also emphasized the potential in agriculture, construction, technology, and energy. Dzeyi responded by expressing the Kurdistan Region’s readiness to support deeper collaboration and to provide a stable environment for foreign businesses.

Bulgaria first opened its economic and trade office in Erbil in 2014. Since then, the office has worked to build connections between companies and create long-term business opportunities. Over the years, Bulgarian representatives have encouraged projects in key sectors and facilitated dialogue between investors and local authorities. This experience has laid a strong foundation for the future.

With new leadership at the trade office, Bulgaria aims to build on this progress. Officials stated that they will encourage direct contacts between entrepreneurs. They also plan to organize events that showcase investment possibilities and promote cooperation in modern industries. This proactive approach is expected to attract more Bulgarian companies to the Kurdistan Region.

The Kurdistan Region continues to present itself as a hub for international trade. Its growing infrastructure, skilled workforce, and strategic location make it attractive to global partners. Bulgaria recognizes these advantages and wants to develop a relationship that benefits both sides.

Looking forward, the two sides agreed that closer ties will support economic stability and open more opportunities for businesses and communities. With a shared vision of growth, Bulgaria-Kurdistan Region economic relations are entering a stronger phase.
