The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is moving forward with the Bawanur Dam, a major step for energy and agriculture in the region. The KRG allocated a 250 billion dinar budget to make the project the Kurdistan Region’s third-largest hydroelectric power source.
Additionally, the dam is located on the Sirwan River, between Darbandikhan and Kalar districts. Construction work is progressing rapidly. Heavy machinery operates daily, signaling a transformative era for the Garmian administration area. The project is designed to generate electricity and store 30 million cubic meters of water. This dual function will support both the national power grid and local agriculture.
Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources confirmed the dam’s progress. Officials highlighted that Bawanur Dam will irrigate vast areas, turning arid land into productive farmland. The project also aims to support fish farming, boosting local food security and economic activity.
Moreover, the construction is handled by a joint venture of Zozk, Romanian firm Hidroconstrucția, and Habika company. All work follows strict supervision to meet international standards. The dam captures surface water that would otherwise flow away, supplying irrigation systems and easing pressure on groundwater resources.
Bawanur is part of a broader KRG strategy under the Ninth Cabinet. The plan emphasizes water security, climate resilience, and sustainable agriculture. Parallel projects, including the Gomaspan and Dwin Dams and over 120 ponds, expand water storage across the Kurdistan Region. Together, these initiatives create a regional network for electricity, irrigation, and drinking water.
Officials stress the dam’s economic impact. It strengthens the energy mix with renewable hydropower, supports farmers, and creates opportunities for local tourism. Bawanur also contributes to long-term water management, helping the region face irregular rainfall and drought.
Upon completion, Bawanur will secure its place as a top energy producer while transforming agriculture in Garmian. The project demonstrates the KRG’s commitment to infrastructure, economic growth, and environmental resilience. It represents a milestone in the Kurdistan Region’s efforts to harness water resources for the benefit of people and the economy.
