Erbil International Airport has completed more than 758 flights since air travel returned to normal after the regional ceasefire ended weeks of disruption.
Ahmed Wushyar, Director General of Erbil International Airport, said flight operations have fully resumed. He confirmed that arrivals and departures now run normally on both domestic and international routes.
Flights from Erbil now connect travelers to major destinations across the Middle East and Europe. These destinations include Doha, Istanbul, Ankara, Dubai, Sharjah, Beirut, Damascus, Amman, Tehran, Cairo, and several German cities.
Domestic services between Erbil, Baghdad, and Basra also continue without interruption.
Despite the strong recovery, three airlines have not yet resumed services to Erbil. Wushyar said Germany’s Eurowings, Austria’s Austrian Airlines, and one Greek carrier remain inactive.
Airport officials have not received any official updates about when these airlines will restart operations.
Regional tensions caused the suspension of flights earlier this year. Iraqi authorities temporarily closed the national airspace to protect civilian aircraft and passengers during the military escalation in the region.
The shutdown lasted for several weeks and disrupted thousands of travel plans. However, operations gradually returned after authorities reopened Iraqi airspace.
Erbil International Airport quickly restored its flight schedule under the supervision of Iraq’s Civil Aviation Authority.
The airport remains one of the most important aviation hubs in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. It first received commercial flights in 2003 and officially opened in 2005.
Its runway stretches 4,800 meters, making it one of the longest runways in the world. The airport can serve up to 4.5 million passengers each year.
So far, Erbil International Airport has welcomed more than 18 million travelers. It has also recorded over 206,000 aircraft movements to 270 destinations worldwide.
Nearly 20 airlines currently operate from the airport. These carriers connect Erbil with cities across Iraq, the Gulf, Europe, and neighboring countries.
During the war against ISIS, the airport also played a major logistical role by supporting military and humanitarian operations in the region.
