Fish production in Kurdistan Region continues to meet market demand despite severe drought conditions. The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that drought and low water levels have reduced fish populations in rivers and dams. However, licensed fish production projects keep the market supplied and prevent shortages.

Bestun Najmadin, Director of Fish Resources at the Ministry of Agriculture, said the drought has affected all aquatic life this year. “Rivers have dried up, and small ponds have separated from main channels,” he said. “This situation reduced the number of fish and other aquatic animals.”

Despite these natural challenges, fish production in Kurdistan Region stays resilient. Najmadin explained that active fish farms continue to supply fresh fish to local markets without interruption.

“These projects operate across more than 12,000 dunams of ponds,” he said. “Each dunam yields three tons of fish every year.” He added that these projects play a major role in supporting the region’s food supply.

The Kurdistan Region has 420 officially licensed fish production projects. Together, these farms produce around 4,700 tons of fish each year. They make a major contribution to the region’s total supply.

According to the Livestock Directorate, the Kurdistan Region needs about 80,000 tons of fish annually. Local producers meet most of this demand. Traders import the remaining amount as live or frozen fish.

Najmadin also discussed fish prices. “Last week, carp cost 8,000 dinars per kilogram,” he said. “Now, the price ranges between 6,500 and 7,000 dinars because of lower demand.” He stressed that supply remains strong despite this small decline.

Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture covers 65 percent of the region’s fresh fish needs. Fish plays a key role in supporting food security. Local investments in aquaculture help the region maintain supply even during environmental stress.

With strong planning and reliable infrastructure, fish production in Kurdistan Region continues to deliver stable results. The industry proves its value through resilience and consistent market supply.
