Kurdistan is set to provide 24-hour electricity across the entire region by the end of this year. During the winter, high demand caused some areas that previously lacked round-the-clock electricity to face temporary shortages. Officials will fully resolve these challenges soon.
Therefore, the “Rounaki” project, launched by the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government, is the driving force behind this initiative. This strategic plan aims to expand 24-hour electricity to all cities and towns in the region. Currently, 75% of Kurdistan already enjoys continuous power, and the project plans to reach full coverage by year-end.
Kamal Muhammad Salih, Kurdistan’s Minister of Electricity, said: “Seventy-five percent of Kurdistan already has 24-hour electricity. We are expanding the Rounaki project until February to address technical issues without affecting areas that already have continuous supply.”
Additionally, the electricity shortage in Kurdistan had persisted for over 30 years. However, the ninth cabinet has added an additional 1,840 megawatts to the grid. The Rounaki project, combined with these efforts, will completely eliminate the electricity shortage. Residents and businesses across the region will benefit from reliable, uninterrupted electricity for the first time in decades.
The expansion of 24-hour electricity is expected to support economic growth, improve daily life, and encourage investment in the Kurdistan Region. Officials emphasize that this project represents a milestone in modernizing the region’s infrastructure and meeting citizens’ long-standing demands for stable power.
With full implementation, every city, town, and rural area in Kurdistan will receive continuous electricity by the end of the year, marking a historic achievement for the region’s energy sector.
